Why focus on Atopic Eczema

Mo suffered from eczema as a child which later returned when he was in his late thirties and therefore put on the usual greasy petroleum-based moisturisers, topical steroids and anti-biotics when there was a flare up.

However, Mo’s own condition was not what motivated him to researching and developing his own product. His eldest child had severe eczema from early childhood. By the age of 22 years, his condition was still uncontrolled, and the family observed repeat cycles of topical steroids, greasy emollients, courses of anti-biotics, only offered temporary relief and the eczema would flare up as soon as the steroid use was stopped.

As any parent with a child diagnosed with eczema knows, the impact of eczema is far greater than the skin condition itself. This ailment has an impact on the child through each phase of their life. In childhood, it’s the constant crying and unable to sleep, causing suffering not just for child but the parents too. In teenage years, young people become very self-aware of their condition and how they are ‘different’ from their peers. Teenage years are probably the most important for eczema sufferers because it can affect a young person’s self-esteem, confidence, ability to concentrate, academic achievements, forming relationships etc. If not treated and managed effectively, their condition could influence their personality and social interactions later in life.

The Goal

- Development and Launch of the Ideal Eczema Product

In essence, Derma-Care.UK, wanted to bring to market a product that not only effectively controlled atopic eczema, but has multiple benefits thereby reducing the need for numerous products. However, there was no such product available in the atopic eczema marketplace which meant that one had to be developed.

A product development plan was then written and put into action. The ‘3 – Must Have’ properties in the new treatment were narrowed down to the following.

Targets the itching

The frequent itching sensation followed by severe scratching, is without doubt the biggest hurdle to skin recovery. New skin cells are not allowed to mature and therefore the skin does not heal. To make matters worse, scratching leads to the spread of the condition to other parts of the body. Therefore, an effective product must have the capability to target the itching and minimise the need to scratch

Fast Acting

The ideal product should be quick acting so that the patient begins to feel and see the benefits within 48 hours. This component of the product was deemed critical to the next and final property, accelerating the healing, because as soon as the scratching stops, the skin begins to heal.

Accelerates Healing

Reducing the need to scratch is a major intervention towards healing, however, we at Derma-Care, believed that the speed of healing could be further improved if we have a product that also moisturises, protects and has anti-infective properties. This would mean that likelihood of flare-ups and skin infections would be minimised and thus allowing the patient to live as close to an ‘eczema free life’ as one could hope for.
